This photograph shows the emaciated children of the Holocaust. It reminds of the place in the novel where they arrive at the Musician's block and their new Blockälteste was a German Jew named Alphonse. He wanted to defend the block and would try to get an extra cauldron of soup for the younger and weaker members of the block. Elie states here that the soup was, "For those who dreamed more of an extra portion of food than of liberty." At this point, many just thought about the food, rather than what their situation was, because they had learned to deal with it.
